Individualism and the fight against COVID-19

Abstract What is the role of societal culture in individualism-collectivism paradigm pandemic containment? In prolonged fight against COVID-19, government-initiated non-pharmaceutical interventions critically hinges on citizens’ adherence to these restrictive policies. Using an international setting, this research shows that countries scoring high individualism generally have a more severe COVID-19 situation throughout trajectory pandemic. This link between and severity virus plausibly due social non-cooperativeness individualistic which reduces effectiveness aimed at mitigating situation. Exploiting cultural disparity former East West German districts, further demonstrates that, after controlling for local characteristics can affect outcome, districts less than districts. Evidence collectively suggests greater reluctance among people cultures heed virus-fighting policies impose negative public health externality
